| The 2007
South Island Regional Tournament was organised by Mr
Grant Evans and on the 5th and 6th of May and took place
at Villa Maria College in Christchurch. It all commenced
on Friday night with volunteers arriving at the venue
to set up for the weekend ahead. The region’s
brand new mats were put to use as we constructed the
three rings – somewhat painstakingly, as there
was a little confusion over how big they should be,
how we were going to fit them into the do-jang and in
addition the oh-so-fun task of labelling each and every
one of them.
The major results were:
Best Club - Riccarton
Best Men's Team - Riccarton
Best Women's Team - Dunedin
Tenets Award -Witnee Wehi, Dunedin
Best Overall
Black Belt -Amanda Cleland, Otago University
Best Overall Red Belt -
Michael Davies, Riccarton
Best Overall Blue Belt -
Helen Caley, Riccarton
Best Overall Green Belt
- Emma Smaill, Mosgiel
Best Overall Yellow Belt
- Chun Hong Yoon, Riccarton
Best Overall White Belt - Lucy Kent, Threshold

Form-up was at 8am sharp on Saturday morning. After
the formalities, club briefings, and some nervous time
spent scrutinising the draws, the patterns competition
soon got started. It was all exciting stuff to watch
and consequently difficult to decide which ring to focus
on. Everything ran very smoothly and we were soon ahead
of schedule. As the finals took place, it was clear
that Riccarton was doing very well in this event.
The afternoon was comprised of individual special technique
and sparring preliminaries. Some of these were very
energetic and quickly drew a crowd. Before too long
the finalists had been decided, and the bronze medal
matches went ahead. Female team patterns ran just before
the finish of competition on Day One.
Sunday form up was with a few less people as numerous
competitors were now spectators for the sparring finals
and team specialty. Team sparring was gripping to watch
as the best of each club faced off against each other.
This was followed by power destruction, which was also
a thrill to observe. The remaining medals and trophies
were handed out after the do-jang had been packed up.
Riccarton took out the coveted Best Club award largely
thanks to its big team and quality patterns.
For numerous people this was their first time participating
in a tournament. That so many are now keen on competing
again is a testament to how enjoyable and well organised
the event was. A big thank you to Mr Grant Evans, the
officials, the participants, the spectators and others
who helped out. See you all next year!
