The 2008 Nationals Champs were held and the Queen Elizabeth
Youth Centre in Tauranga on the weekend of the 4th & 5th
of October 2008. I will not claim to be a legend at writing
up the events of the weekend so I have just included some
pics with some captions and hopefully you will get the general
idea! The team this year was relatively small but hugely enthusiastic
and everyone did a fantastic job. The highlights and embarrassments
of the weekend for me personally were when I managed to crash
our rental van in a super market car park, (welcome back to
National Comps Ange!), Mr Sopers gruelling 5 round final (which
he won) and the South Island Men's teams first round of team
sparring which honestly impressed me so much I was almost
brought to tears. All the boys did such an amazing job. I
was especially impressed with Mr Michael Davies who was told
by Mr Herbison after he sparred that it was the best sparring
he had ever seen from him, and Mr Hamish Duncan who was matched
up against the very experienced and formidable Mr Dave Ballard,
V Dan and coach of the NZ team for next years world champs.
Both young fella's coming out with wins. Well done!

Mr Eade won his first round fight to go on
and win gold for Men's Dan Middleweight Sparring
Mr Davies was the recipient of the silver
medal in this division!
Mr Soper won this first round to go on to
a gruelling 5 round final! Well done for the hard work Mr
Soper!
Mr Eade and Mr Duncan doing a fine job in
the Pre-Arranged Sparring division.
Male Team Pattern
Mr Davies won his first round in the Men's
Dan Middleweight Sparring division.
Mr Burt won his first bout against possibly
the biggest man I've ever seen. Unfortunately Mr Burt didn't
win this 2nd bout and finshed with the silver medal.
Ms Caley sparred well but was defeated by
Yvette Perrott who went on to win Best Overall Red Belt.
Mr Luke Jackson sparred bravely but was defeated.
I was defeated by Amelia Perry from Counties
Manukau
Mana Williams-Eade gives it heaps!
Miss Read sparred well but was defeated by
scary Freya Thomson of Central Districts, who had also defeated
Holly Eades in the previous bout.

Nicole Woods did a great job, taking out the
silver medal for Intermediate Girls 1-4 Gup Hyperweight.
Mr Craig Oliver takes gold!
Sophie Hadjis sparred with talent but unfortunately
was let down by a lot of warnings and was defeated. Well done
at her first ever National Championships, we have high hopes
for her next time!
