2002 ITFNZ Annual Awards

Junior student of the year is Mr Daniel Kerr

Congratulations goes to South Island Taekwon-Do student Mr Daniel Kerr, who has been awarded ITFNZ Junior Student of the Year 2002. Mr Daniel Kerr regularly trains at the Dunedin, Mosgiel and Otago University Taekwon-Do Clubs in Dunedin. He attends all events that he can, from Umpires courses and techniques seminars to the Regional and National and Junior World Tournaments.

This is Mr Kerrs nomination:

When Mr. Jake Pearson left the South Island to continue his studies in Wellington, Daniel took over the role of Instructor of the Dunedin Club for 6 months to ensure that the club continued running. Mr Kerr always has high achievements in Tournaments and recently achieved the following places in the South Island Regional Tournament: 1st in the Mens Black Belt Heavy/Hyper Weight Sparring, 3rd in Specialty Technique and 2nd in the Power Test. Daniel is currently a member of the Junior World Champs Team competing in Puerto Rico in December. He is representing us in II Dan Patterns, Individual Sparring, Individual Power Test and also the Mens Team Event. This is Daniels second time in the Junior World Champs Team. Daniel has trained in Dunedin since he was 9 years old, and the region has seen him grow up in this time, to be one of the top exponents of Taekwon-Do in the country.

Daniel regularly helps out at club level by instructing members in small groups or even the entire class. Not only does he does this at the Dunedin Club but he also instructs at the Mosgiel and Otago University Clubs as well, imparting his knowledge and experiences from his travels around New Zealand and the World to the students of all the clubs in Dunedin. Daniel also helps out with officiating at tournaments and marshalling at gradings.

Daniel is an excellent exponent of the tenets of Taekwon-Do as he manages to not only help out others but also keep his own training to such a high level in one of the remotest parts of ITFNZ Taekwon-Do in New Zealand. Still very busy in his last year of school he dedicates most of his spare time to training, be it by himself or with the aid of others. He is also always modest in all his achievements, no matter how high they are. For these reasons we nominate him for Junior Student of the Year.

News in Brief

Otago University - Best Club

With 15 points the Otago University Club took out the highest points and was awarded best club in the country for the September 2002 Grading round. Well done Instructors and Students of Otago University!

Nov Grading Round

The Nov Grading round was a relatively quiet affair down south with no grading in Christchurch and the majority of students away in Dunedin. However, Mr Patterson made things exciting with a demanding training after the Dunedin grading.

Thank-you Mr Patterson for the gradings and trainings you took in 2002. Congratulations to those who graded this year!

Dunedin Instructor Moves

Mr Grant Evans has moved to Christchurch to continue his career as a mechanic and auto electrician.

Grant will be missed in Dunedin. He is an unbeliveable instructor an asset to the South. Congratulations Christchurch!

New Mats for Dunedin

Dunedin's Mr Kris Herbison has been working hard for the Region. The region now has access to two rings for tournaments and training. Well done Mr Herbison!

Thank you to ITFNZ and the Hillary Commission for providing the funding to allow this to happen.
