Results from the Otago Challenge
Courtesy of Neil Kettings
Dunedin Club put out the challenge to all
the Otago Clubs. We had a small number of competitors who
wanted to put themselves to the test. The idea was a quick
fire contest on a Saturday afternoon – keeping everything
as basic as possible. It was $5 entry – and all money
going to the winner.
There were a number of divisions where the challenge was not
taken up by anyone and two who had to withdraw. However on
the day Central Club travelled from Alex to take on the challenge
for four sparring matches and two patterns. A small group
of about 20 supporters were there to watch which added to
the good atmosphere of the challenge.
First up was Ruifa Huang (Dn) against Johnny
Maheno (Cn) for Patterns. Ruifa was away like a shot on the
first pattern but Johnny had a long pause before he started.
Designated pattern was Chon-ji and overall this ended in a
draw and a deciding pattern gave the decision to Johnny from
Central.
Second up was Tash Kettings (Dn) against
Nigel Patterson (Cn) for patterns. Both did Gae bek as their
optional with a bit of hesitation from Nigel at the start.
Again the designated pattern was Chon-Ji and the decision
went to Tash.
First sparring match was Ruifa Huang (Dn)
35kgs – Blue belt against Nelson Gaw 43kgs- green stripe
(Cn). This was a good match-up with Nelson showing great use
of some straight kicks to keep Ruifa away. Nelson however
received a number of warnings and the closely fought match
went to Ruifa.
The second match was Callum Stewart-Flett
aged 9 (Dn) 25kgs 7th Gup against Jesse Fennessey aged 10
(Cn) 34kgs 5th Gup. This was a match that could have been
a bit of a mis-match but Callum stepped up and put up a good
fight against a more experienced opponent. Callum did a lot
of the attacking but received a few good straight punches
for his trouble. This was a good feisty match with good control
displayed – the final winner being Jesse.
Next up was Thom Bryers a really keen 10th
gup (Dn) 100kgs against Hayden Booth (Cn) 3rd Gup 78kgs. With
a little boxing behind him Thom was keen to see how he would
go. Another exciting match that ended up with the more experienced
Hayden taking the win.
The final match was Dean Jenkins 2nd Dan
(Dn) against Nigel Patterson 1st Dan (Cn). The younger Nigel
did a lot of chasing scoring some good shots with Dean getting
quite a few warnings for various offences. This was another
crowd pleaser – full of action. The final decision going
to Nigel.
Overall the afternoon was a great success
and for those who want more tournament experience this may
be the answer. The next one won't be far away.
Cheers Neil Kettings

Self Defence Seminars
During 21 May to 27 May the South Island is bringing several
self-defence semainrs to the members of the Region to further
develop your skills needed in a real self-defence situation.
First there will be Stripes on Tour seminars conducted by
Mr Steve Pellow, VI dan, and Mr Mark Banicevich, V dan, both
from Auckland covering the new gup syllabus released by ITFNZ
at the beginning of this year. These seminars will be conducted
in each main city so all the Regions members will have access
to the seminars. These seminars will begin developing the
physical skills needed by all members for self-defence. A
brief introduction to the new Black Belt syllabus will also
be shown, along with additional training for school instructors.

and Registration for Stripes on Tour here
Secondly there are seminars being offered by Protect Self-Defence
where they will cover the psychological aspects and how to
deal with the fear and adrenaline that you will encounter
if you are assaulted for real (rather than by your partner
in class...)
There will be 3 different seminars, one for general self-defence
situations, a short seminar on dealing with being attacked
with sticks and knives as well as a rape prevention course
for women. These seminars will be held in Christchurch and
are open to anyone who wishes to learn more about self defence.
